The name of the city is derived from a wild short stature shrub known as Layyan. The shrub is of fuel wood and before the city was founded, the place was all covered with this layyan shrub, thus it was names as Layyah which is also spelled as Leiah. The boundaries of the district have Bhakkar district at its north, Indus river flows from the east to the west side side of layyah and in the south there is Muzzaffargarh District. The climate of the city is extremely hot and and the maximum temperature that has been recorded in the region is upto 53 Celsius. The winter is cold due to the reason that the region is near to the hills of Suleman Mountan Range in Khyber Pakhtunkhaa. There are sand dunes and forest in the region as well.
